So you know you're in a committed relationship when it's 11:00 on a Saturday night and you're sitting at home watching your boyfriend snore on the couch. What happened to the parties, the staying up all night talking, or the dates in general? I feel like an old woman sitting here with only the cat for company. It's pretty sad really.
I guess I could go out for a girls night, or meet up with some friends from school, but little by little I'm discovering that my circle of friends outside of Joey is dwindling. I used to hate those girls who disappeared after a new flame came into their life, but I guess I'm becoming one of them. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to be dating my best friend, but sometimes it worries me that I'm losing contact with others because I feel the need to spend every waking moment by his side.
Maybe it's just that I'm growing up. The drinking and partying has not been as appealing to me as of late. I'd rather just curl up with a good book or have a meaningful get-together with friends. Whatever it is, I do miss those spontaneous nights once in awhile and would like to think that I still have it in me...

Listening Skills: The Inca Cola Conundrum

If you ask a woman what causes the most issues in her relationship with her significant other, her answer will come out like a reflex...LISTENING. The sad truth of it is that men often don't have the strongest listening skills. My favorite example of this in my own relationship is the infamous "Inca Cola Conundrum" as I like to call it.
I suppose I should preface this story with the fact that Joey LOVES a soda called "Inca Cola." Inca Cola, also known as "Golden Cola" is a Peruvian soft drink that is yellow in color and tastes kind of like bubblegum. So continuing with the story...
Joey, our roommate Ryan, and I had planned to have a party one evening. As Ryan and I were heading out to buy "drinks" for the gathering, we asked Joey if he wanted us to pick up anything for him. After attempting to ask him four times, he finally looked up, with a face of pure horror, and asked..."Did you drink my Inca Cola?"
I said no and relieved, he turned back to his computer. I attempted to explain that we were going to purchase alcoholic beverages and again asked if he wanted us to pick anything up for him. Again he looked over and said, "So wait, you DID drink it?"
This went on for about five more minutes before he fully grasped the concept of what Ryan and I were attempting to tell him.
Finally, Ryan and I gave up and brought him back a bottle of bourbon, not before hiding his Inca Cola...
Now this was far from the first time he didn't listen and I'm sure it won't be the last...so here's my advice to all of you guys out there. If you're going to ignore what your girlfriend is saying, at least try to grasp her concept. It makes life a lot easier....
How we met...
So here's a little bit of history about how Joey and I met. During my freshman year of college, I worked a great deal with a local organization which built homes for low-income families in our community. It was my first time leading a group on my own during a build, and I was incredibly excited about the opportunity.
At 5 a.m. sharp on an incredibly cold February morning, I stood outside a coffee shop waiting for my crew to assemble. We were about to leave when two very tired, very hungover guys approached. With coffee in hand, Joey mustered all of the enthusiasm he could and attempted to "fire up" his buddy and the rest of our team about how incredible the homeowners would feel once their new place was completed. Wincing at the sound of every nail being hammered into the beams of the home and covering his ears at the sound of the circular saws, I was impressed at how well Joey was able to function, under the circumstances. His sense of humor and enthusiasm towards helping others struck me right away. After laughing about his buddy's ruthless attempts to pick up my co-leader, Joey and I convinced her to humor him and hang out after the build.
After spending some time together that evening Joey and I became friends. It has been almost four years since we first met and in that time we have became best friends, lived across the hall from one another in the dorms, and finally made the decision to date and to move in together. Right in time for the Inauguration of Obama, change came my way and my best friend/boyfriend moved in with me. Although it's taken some getting used to, I love having Joey around 24/7 and can't imagine my life without him.

This blog is dedicated to those of you who have boyfriends who require "special" attention. From enouraging to wash the dishes which have been sitting in the sink for over a week (when, ironically, you were away for said week), to picking up the clothing they leave all over the floor, to teaching them how to behave while in the presence of a priest/relatives/people in general, I hope this survival guide will help you through your first six months of living with a boy.
